According to the Instructions a Standard Servo is all that is needed for steering. A High Torque Servo would be an improvement, but is not necessary.
The Speed Control that comes with the kit reverses the rotation on one of the motors. It can do this because both of the motors
have Zero Degree Timing. This basically means that it can rotate in either direction.
If NEW MOTORS are bought for the kit, one will need to be reverse (stock motor) or have adjustable timing (so you can reverse it)
Almost all the motors out there do not have 0 Timing. They are either set up for forward or reverse. That is why they will need
to buy a motor that is, or can be, set up for reverse.

They can still use the stock speed control with a reverse stock motor (it would be the same if they switched to an electronic speed control), but they will have to flip around the connections (- to + and + to -) to get it to run right.
